Autumn Hills Journal '07
January -- Winter was late in coming but now that it's here, we're planning for spring in full force. There's pruning still to be done, and we're ordering seeds for the garden as well as some new, young trees for planting. Winter brings time to plan, but there's still lots of work to do. A new (old) woodstove in the shop keeps us warm when the bitter wind screams across the ridges. We miss seeing the snowscapes of past years, but those persistent prevailing winds don't hesitate to remind us that winter is here for a while. February -- Bitter cold winds and snow storms confirm that winter is finally here if only for a while. With snow covering the terrain, the comings and goings of our orchard critters are easy to observe. Uh-oh. We can see there are a lot of deer here and we worry about having so many of them about, as they do nibble on the trees. We also see the turkey tracks in the snow and wonder why they bother to trudge up and down the hills when they could simply fly from here to there? Most every evening, our local Great Horned Owl glides in from the woods then courses up and down between the rows of trees hunting for dinner. We also follow other tracks as we go about our work. Coyote, rabbit, and the beaver down by the pond. Mostly, though, its the deer tracks we encounter and we wonder if they watch us during the day from the cover of the woods as we traipse about their night-time playgroud.
